Carousel Spotlight: Fernando Rosario

January 25, 2018

Pier 62 Carousel, located beside Chelsea Piers, is one of the most beautiful carousels in New York City and continues to be a favored family attraction for riders of all ages.

While its location beside the Hudson River and Hudson River Park in Manhattan serves to enhance its whimsical appeal, the carousel itself is something to be marveled. It features 33 creatures (and one chariot), highlighting animals that are native to the Hudson River Valley: a Wild Turkey, a Mallard Duck, a Black Bear...and of course, the Butterfly Unicorn. Furthermore, Pier 62 Carousel is a wonderful addition to the many outdoor activities of Piers 62 and 63, including a nearby skate park and gardens. Many guests love to include a ride on the carousel in between events or a picnic at the park!

But who better to speak about the carousel and the great influences its had in the community other than our very own site manager, Fernando Rosario, who has been operating Pier 62 Carousel for eight seasons (since we opened!).

Fernando is a native New Yorker but spends the off-season with his wife and kids in Japan (where his wife is originally from). In addition to being fluent in Japanese and enjoying his time operating the carousel, he's also an avid traveler and writes about his cross-country adventures on his blog! Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of getting to know Fernando a little more and what it means for him to continue cultivating the relationships he's made during his time working with us - some since the carousel's beginning.

Me: Konnichiwa, Rosario-san! (Good afternoon, Mr. Rosario!)

Fernando: Konnichiwa!

Me: In a nutshell, how many countries have you been to and what are your top three destinations?

Fernando: 17 countries - all over Asia and of course, all over the U.S. My favorite countries are Japan, Vietnam, and Mexico because I love their food, culture, and people.

Me: Amazing! How about for those visiting New York - what would you recommend to your guests from out of town?

Fernando: They MUST eat at Katz and Bare Burger!

Me: Good recommendations! So you've been with Pier 62 Carousel since we opened. What has been your favorite thing about operating this carousel for eight whole seasons?

Fernando: I love being a part of Pier 62 Carousel because I have a very strong connection to this community, especially with the kids. Some of them have been riding this carousel for years so I've had the pleasure of watching them grow up with the carousel, especially when they host their birthdays here (some more than once!). This kind of close connection with the kids is near to my heart, and being a part of their special day is one of the things I look forward to.

Me: That's really great to hear how this carousel has helped bridge these relationships. For those who are contemplating where to host their child's birthday this year, what are among the best reasons to party with us at Pier 62 Carousel?

Fernando: The amazing view, great music, and an excellent staff that'll make sure each parent has a great experience hosting their birthday party with us!

If you have a chance to stop by the carousel this weekend, make sure to say hi to Fernando and ask him about other excellent food recommendations in New York; what his favorite animal to ride on the carousel is; and how you can book your party at Pier 62 Carousel.
